Help update our database of ATMs!

In this day and age, you'd think that a simple, reliable list of ATMs across the UK would be readily available. But you'd be wrong. While there are some published databases of ATM locations, they fall into two categories:

  1. Expensive
  2. Crap

The problem is that many financial institutions see a list of ATMs as a way to generate income by selling those lists to websites such as this one. The majority of UK banks don't even list their own ATM network on their own websites, preferring instead to sell the data to resellers.

The free lists, by contrast, tend to be poorly maintained and usually rely on ATM operators keeping them up to date. Which, on the whole, they have little or no incentive to do. In particular, the coordinates of databases in the free lists tend to be wildly inaccurate, as they're generated by geocoding the address and postcode. Given that a postcode can, particularly in rural areas, cover several square miles, that's not really helpful if you need to find an ATM within walking distance.

What Travelmash is trying to do, therefore, is generate a crowd-sourced database of ATMs with accurate geograhic coordinates (latitude and longitude). And that's where you come in.

We need you to tell us the correct locations (and correct details) for ATMs near you. And tell us about ATMs that we currently don't know about. To do that, either start with the ATM list and find one you want to correct, or go directly to the ATM update page to add a new one.

We've seeded the initial databases with some of the crap data out there. Hopefully, after a while we'll be able to replace most, if not all, of that with useful data. Once there's enough to be useful, the entire crowd-sourced data will be released under a Creative Commons licence so that anyone else can use it too.

So, what are you waiting for? Get updating!
